Plant trees. New trees will begin establishing their root system even as they move toward dormancy.
Don't forget your root stimulator for all plantings
Once you've planted your fall/winter color ... don't forget to fertilize. They're heavy feeders.
Prune shade trees, crape myrtles and other spring flowering trees. Do not commit "Crape Murder" by topping crape myrtles.
Be prepared for cold weather. Water before a deep freeze to help "freeze-proof" plants. Mulch provides great insulation.
Remember to mulch to aid in moisture retention, root-zone insulation and weed control. We recommend “no float” wood mulches (hardwood, cedar, cypress).
Water Wise
Know and follow your city's water restrictions - given our drought conditions, the restrictions change.
Recently planted trees, shrubs, bedding plants & turf will require supplemental hand watering during establishment period.Do NOT depend on irrigation system to establish new plantings.
INFREQUENT and DEEP watering encourages deep rooting. Learn how to "calibrate" your irrigation zones.
MULCH, MULCH, MULCH - provides insulation, water retention and weed control. It SAVES water.
Drip irrigation can be a great investment for beds (but be prepared to water for longer periods).
Check your irrigation system for proper operation often. Don't assume it is working properly. A leak can waste valuable water.
